Dave and I went up to Huntington Beach this last Saturday to catch the US Surf Open! It was a beautiful day and there were crowds for sure. However, the event has changed from what it used to be. The crowd was absolutely there to watch surfing and skating competitions.

In the past I hesitated letting any of our kids down to the pier where the crowds were because it seemed just a little raunchy. Not any more. They got rid of the rock concert and half of the booths that handed out freebies. The US Open is now all about the competitors!

We were standing up on the pier watching the surfers with a bird's-eye view. the amazing thing was to watch the men doing their tricks and then going right under the pier through the pylons. Watch the video at the end of this post of a view of Kade Matson coming through the pier.
Hey you photographers - look to what length this guy goes to get his photos.
Caitlin Simmers (Tiny 13 year old girl from Oceanside!). She won women's junior finals.
We were hoping to catch Samantha Sibley, who won the SuperGirl competition in Oceanside. She was 3rd in the semi-finals in her heat earlier in the week at the US Open. She ended up 49th.
Bethany Hamilton finished 4th in her first heat - also earlier in the week.

OK, so, the girls were finished and then the boys came out from under the pier to take their place! I was amazed at how hard they were riding and the tricks they were doing! I said to Dave, "The waves just got bigger!" But in the end I think it was just the riders!
